mind-body therapy

At Holistic Vitality Center, we understand that making healthy changes in your life may be difficult. We utilize various strategies that aid in the facilitation of healthy lifestyle changes, both physically and emotionally. By listening, inspiring, empowering, and motivating we help clients reach their highest level of wellness. Through a confidential nonjudgmental relationship clients will identify obstacles and learn techniques to create positive movement and change.

Mind-Body Therapies:
Autogenics

Autogenic training is a technique used to reduce stress through mental exercises to produce physical relaxation. One of the most efficient and widely used ways to balance sympathetic overdrive with parasympathetic relaxation is to combine simple relaxation with phrases and images that engage the parasympathetic nervous system. The phrases have an effect on the center of the brain that registers images (the hypothalamus, and the autonomic nervous system) thereby producing the relaxation response.

Biofeedback and autogenic training are effective, easy to learn ways to balance the fight or flight response and reduce chronic stress. Both have been shown in study after study to enhance immunity, lower blood pressure, decrease levels of chronic pain, lower levels of anxiety, and improve mood.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a technique for teaching the control of autonomic functions, such as the rate of heartbeat or breathing, by recording the activity and presenting it (usually visually) so that the person can know the state of the autonomic function and learn ways to control it.

Biofeedback involves the use of an instrument to tell the brain what is going on in the body. One of the most widely and easily used approaches is "thermal biofeedback" which uses a device called a thermistor to measure the temperature at the periphery of the body, in the finger. When your eyes see the temperature going up as you relax, your brain learns what it needs to tell your body to relax.

Breathing Technique

Breathing is responsive to emotional states and can also shape emotional states. Deep breathing techniques improve your body's ability to bring in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Deep breathing calms the mind and engages the body's natural relaxation response. Deep breathing also lowers blood pressure, slows heart rate and improves cardiac function. It is also useful for other stress-related conditions such as diabetes, intestinal problems, asthma, chronic pain, depression and anxiety.

Guided Imagery

Guided imagery is a form of deliberate and directed daydreaming. It is a powerful, time-honored method for understanding yourself, healing your body and mind and maintaining your overall well-being. Imagery uses all of the senses and is the dominant language through which the unconscious mind communicates information and inspiration to the conscious mind- and to the body as well. It is a way we have of talking to ourselves.

Imagery makes thought vivid and gives it the capacity to act on all the rest of the brain and the body. Imagery is central because it is connected with so many important functions in the brain: with the emotional part of the brain, with the perceptions that we receive through our ears and eyes and our body, with the areas of the brain that are concerned with thought and association, and with the hypothalamus, the central switching system for the autonomic nervous system, the endocrine and the immune systems.

Thousands of clinicians and researchers all over the world have used imagery with people with variety of problems. What they have discovered and what they have shared with the world in the research they're publishing is the power of images to affect a wide variety of physical functions and mental attitudes.

Integrative Health Coaching

Integrative Health Coaching provides people with the tools to create healthy goals, become active in their healing process, encourage positive attitudes, make healthy lifestyle modifications, and maintain a customized wellness plan.

Integrative health coaches motivate people to implement their personal wellness plans and goals. We help guide people to understand the connection between the mind and the body, fostering a balanced mind-set. We teach ways to help prevent and reduce the effects of various diseases and conditions such as, diabetes, depression, anxiety, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

Meditation

Meditation is the act of engaging in contemplation or reflection. It creates a relaxed state of moment-to-moment awareness, which is critical to stress reduction and self-awareness. The awareness you develop in meditation helps you identify the circumstances and conditions that cause you stress, which is the first step in learning to manage your stress.

Meditation is the heart of healing and it's about being in the moment or the "here and now." Every spiritual and religious tradition in the world has meditative practices. And you don't have to be religious to do meditation.

Self-awareness and Self-expression

One of the keys to stress management is experiencing your emotions fully and moving through them, rather than becoming stuck in them. Stress management techniques can help you become aware of your emotions and expressing them.

Drawings are for you to know yourself better, to discover yourself. They are an exercise in self-awareness and a form of self-expression. Drawings are a form of imagery. Imagination accesses the unconscious mind. Drawings can reveal unconscious thoughts that govern your behavior and help you to find answers for handling stressful situations. This exercise is useful for identifying and exploring any issue in your life.

Therapeutic Exercise

Many studies have shown the effectiveness of exercise in the prevention and treatment of illnesses. There are many forms of exercise and it is important to find one that suits you. Exercise gives us a sense that we have the ability to make a difference in our own health, to act in such a way that we can improve how we feel. This creates self-efficacy, the feeling that we can make a difference for ourselves, which alone promotes health. Therapeutic exercise is a way of using the body to create an enjoyable state of peacefulness and relaxation.
